Artist's proof

For every color study, I paint at least two artist's proofs to get the color right before painting the whole set of 10. This one is the second artist's proof (APII) from the series of Cobalt Blue Light and the second piece I painted from the entire series. Both first and second are somewhat different from the rest of the series because I used a different paint formula and distinct technique, which I later modified. This particular artist's proof is also unique in that it is the only one painted on a white ground, which I did for comparison. Because this series is about the appearance of a single pigment in its purest form, I didn't adopt the technique of painting on a white ground for the rest of the series, so this will remain the only one painted that way.

Oil on paper

While the text gets printed in archival black pigment ink, the color on every sheet is meticulously hand-painted with oil paint. Because of this, some works will have minor “imperfections.”
For some paints/pigments, painting an even swatch of color is very challenging, and therefore some studies might have slight nuances in the color field. Others will have little dabs of paint getting outside of the rectangular swatch. I appreciate these variations as part of the process making each work unique.
